The ecological quality of shallow lakes in Western Europe has improved substantially in the last few decades by successful measures to diminish eutrophication. However, many lakes still have declining biodiversity or at least have not recovered to the ecological quality under reference conditions. Food web dynamics, the interactions between hydraulics and vegetation and the importance of either declining or invading ecosystem engineers are among the mechanisms that play a role here.
